Dennis Houses & Tavern - Our special accommodation of the week

Dennis Houses & Tavern

Our special accommodation of the week

Every week ZanteHotels4u proudly presents you a special accommodation with owners that deserve a closer look. Not because they have big hotels and welcome many guests, but because we as a team love their hospitality and how they treat their guests. This week in the spotlight: Dennis Houses & Tavern in Tsilivi.

Pigi, the owner of ZanteHotels4u, together with Dennis
The most important thing that is special about Dennis Houses is the hospitality of the owners; Dennis and Maria.
They want to make sure that their guests spend amazing holidays. In their opinion this is not by offering super deluxe rooms with jacuzzi and champagne, but by offering simple but comfortable rooms and Greek wine

They welcome you with a package of Greek products, consisting of softdrinks, water, bread, eggs, ham & cheese, marmalade, coffee, tea and sugar. They think it’s important to provide this so that their guests have a comfortable arrival in a country that is not their own.

It's logic that guests are tired after a trip to Zakynthos. We give them a welcome package so that they can have their first drinks and meal in order to have a good start of the holidays. After this, they are ready to explore Zakynthos!

The Dennis Houses consist of studios for 2 or 3 guests and 2 houses, ideal for families. The houses and studios are located opposite of Dennis pride; his traditionally Greek Tavern

Dennis Tavern

Here he serves breakfast from 8 to 10 in the morning, of course in Greek style.
If you would like to try his breakfast, you can expect the following:
Bread, butter, marmalade, fried eggs with bacon and sausages, yoghurt, tomatoes and olives and every day Dennis and his wife will treat you something extra: tyropita (=cheese pie), spanakopita (=spinach pie) or bougatsa (=cream pie) They want to make sure that you will taste the real Greece and that you won’t be hungry soon!

From 13:00 to midnight, the tavern is open for lunch or dinner (or both.…) Dennis serves Zakynthian dishes with meat or fish on the grill. He will make sure that this will be an experience, so he will let you eat “the traditional way” as he explains in the following quote:

“Lamb chops shouldn’t be eaten with a knife and fork. I don’t give my guests a knife and fork, but show them how we eat it here in Greece: by hand. After they are satisfied with their meal, I will bring them a bowl with water so that they can wash their hands. My guests appreciate that I want to make them feel like a local. It is important to me that I show my guests that they are in Greece, and not in any other country.”

Dennis and his wife describe themselves as simple but good and very hospitable people. It makes them happy when they see that their guests are having a good time choosing the real Greek hospitality and traditions, rather than the big all-inclusive hotels.
Dennis also produces homemade olive oil, olives and wine. For the guests that would like to take these products home as memories of their amazing stay at Dennis Houses, there is good news: These homemade products are for sale.

For the people that are interested after reading about these hospitable persons, I will give some information about the studios and houses.

Dennis opening the door of Spyros House to show us around

There are 2 renovated studios for 2-3 guests that have all the facilities you need for a comfortable stay. They consist of a double bed and a single bed, and if you have the wish to have 3 single beds, Dennis will grant it! There is a kitchen with all the facilities to cook your meals (and if you’re not in the mood to cook, you just cross the street!) and a private bathroom. Of course there is air-conditioning to cool down after a day in the Greek sun

Dennis also has 2 houses named after his children; Spyros and Spyridoula.

* Spyridoula can accommodate up to 7 guests in 3 different bedrooms. It has a fully equipped kitchen to practice your cooking skills with the local products, a bathroom and a balcony all around the house, so that you can find shade at every moment of the day. For your comfort, everything is located on one floor.
* Spyros can accommodate up to 6 guests in 3 bedrooms. This house is ideal for families, since 2 bedrooms have bunk beds. Downstairs there are a spacious kitchen and living room and a separate toilet with washing machine, so that you don’t need to walk upstairs when you have just installed yourself on the couch. The three bedrooms are upstairs. The master bedroom has an ensuite bathroom, while the other two bedrooms share a bathroom.

ZanteHotels4u loves the philosophy of Dennis and Maria. Being hospitable and making sure that guests have a good time is something everyone should strive for.

The "new" to all Greece Overnight Stay Tax

The "new" to all Greece Overnight Stay Tax

Beginning the year of 2018, every guest visiting beautiful Greece and our beautiful island of Zakynthos will have to pay an Overnight Stay Tax which was introduced by the Greek Ministry of Tourism. The tax was introduced to aim at enhancing the State revenue in the context of the current fiscal adjustment programme. The Stay Tax will be collected during every guest's arrival at their chosen accommodation. The Overnight Stay Tax works out to 0,50 - 4 € per night depending on the type of accommodation booked by the guest. The amount paid will depend on the official rating of your chosen accommodation, as set out in the table below:

Types of Accommodation
Euros/per night
5 Star Hotels
4€
4 Star Hotels
3€
3 Star Hotels
1.5€
1-2 Star Hotels
0.5€
Apartments - all key categories
0.5€

The amount paid by you will be based on the official rating of the accommodation you have chosen to book. The accommodation on our website will give you an indication of the standard ratings. Every booking from our website will receive the Tax amount which is excluded from the total amount and will be paid upon arrival.

When do you pay the Overnight Stay Tax and how to pay:

You’ll be asked to pay the Overnight Stay Tax when you check-in at your accommodation, this can be paid by cash or card.

Why do I have to pay the Overnight Stay Tax:

The Overnight Stay Tax is something new to Greece and is aimed mostly towards tourists visiting our country. The Overnight Stay Tax is beyond our websites and hoteliers control. The Government Overnight Stay imposed tax by all guests (Greek and foreigners ) while staying in any accommodations located in Greece. We do understand that this cost was not something expected by guests coming to Zakynthos, but it is something the Government decided to in force in a very short period of time.

Tips on what to do in May on Zakynthos Island

Kampi Village

Kampi is a village on the western side of Zakynthos, surrounded by green olive trees with a panoramic view of the Gulf of Fokia.

When you'll be satisfied with your photos, you can stop there for a while and have a look at the traditional square with the old houses.

The view from the height of 300 metres (Kampi is situated on the edge of a cliff) is impressive, especially when the sun sets. A huge cross stands there in honour of the victims during the civil war and a bit further a Mycenaean cemetery is situated. The gulf of Fokia (seal) was named after the seals that come every year in the caves.

After this it's time for dinner with a view! The ''tavern of Pappa'' serves excellent food. From this tavern you will spend some time to admire the panoramic view of the Ionian sea. During sunset the sky is painted with light colours while the sun 'dives' into the horizon.

Tip! At the tavern of Pappa, you should try and reserve table 33, from where you will have the best view of the sea and the sunset of the whole tavern!

After the sun has set and you have enjoyed your dinner, you should make your last stop for the day at: Bochali Hill.

Bochali Hill

This is the hill above Zakynthos Town, from which you have a panoramic view over Zakynthos Town and its port, Laganas Gulf, Vasilikos and even the Peloponese. Especially at nighttime this view is amazing.
If you're not too full, have a seat and treat yourself with a traditional Zakynthian sweet called "Frigania" from one of the cafes in Bochali!

Zakynthos Town

The capital of Zakynthos island!

Zakynthos is a busy town with a wide choice of dining or entertainment and a great variety of cultural attractions on offer. It is worthwhile visiting the Vergiagio Folklore Museum, the statue of Dionysios Solomos in Solomos square, the church of Agios Dionysios (saint Dennis) the protector saint of the island and Saint Markos Square with the Venetian style clock.

Also don’t miss the busy Saint Mark square, ideal for a walk in the afternoon or in the evening. Here is the buzz of Zakynthos town where you will find a lot of locals on their afternoons/ evenings out. There are lots of cafes to have some coffee, restaurants to have dinner and shops to buy your souvenirs. The most popular cafes are 'Base' and 'Avant' situated opposite each other. Both of them are preferred by the younger people.

Navagio (Shipwreck)

Navagio is the most famous zakynthian beach and one of the most beautiful beaches all over the world.

Navagio is a beach of unique beauty as it combines the dark blue sea water with a rocky scenery and golden sand. The world famous zakynthian sight is one of the most beautiful beaches around the world, already seen by thousands of tourists. You can visit Navagio beach by boat or see it from above. The panoramic view is breathtaking.

Keri Village

This is a special place to enjoy a romantic dinner together with the view of the setting sun.

Keri is located on the southern part of Zakynthos! The light house of Keri is a tower of 9 metres high. The access is very easy by car. From this point you will enjoy one of the most magical sunsets in the Ionian Islands. In Marathias you will also find the tavern “Votsalo” that serves homemade traditional dishes cooked with local products.

A simple example to understand how Mr. Haralambos helps his guests is the information that he offers occasionally to them,is how to find fresh fish. “Anonymity does not help anyone. The personal contact will help those who stay here to make the most out of their holiday. Therefore we have the opportunity to show what the Zakynthian hospitality means”, said with his stable voice and gave us a tour in this beautiful place.
