Bluer than blue — Encounter Zakynthos in one day
When my wife and I were making travel plan of
our Greece tour, we didn’t put Zakynthos in our schedule initially because the
island was not that famous as Santorini here in China. One week before our trip
to Greece, my wife told me we got to visit Zakynthos because she found the
famous Shipwreck is on that place.
Yes, the ‘Shipwreck’ is more famous than the
island it belongs to. That’s mostly because there is a Korean TV series named ¨Descendants of the Sun" very popular in both China and Korea. And one of
the most romantic plots is filmed at Navagio beach (which is the Famous Shipwreck Beach).

So we decided to pay a one day visit to
Zakynthos from the original Athens trip. It was really an unprepared schedule
but luckily I found zantehotels4u.com
by google. I sent an email to describe my flight schedule and wish list. And
zantehotels4u team replied me in just few hours and provided me a fully
customized plan based on my requirements and time constraints. No doubt I
accepted it immediately.
Finally came that day — July, 16, 2018. We
caught the early flight from Athens to Zakynthos. Zakynthos is located in the south
of the Ionian Sea and is also called "Zante", a name given to it by
the Romans and Venetians, once they for centuries occupied the island.
After having a simple breakfast, our lovely
guide Pigi picked us up at the airport. It was a truly VIP tour so we didn't need to wait for other passengers we just started heading to the north. It took
about 1 hour to reach our first stop — a spot located above the gulf of Alykes.

Continuing the route along the coast, after passing the port
of Agios Nikolaos we arrived at the northest part of Zakynthos, called Korithi. There are old
light house and wind mills in Korithi. We took a good rest here before taking
our boat trip.
I jumped into the water for swimming but the
water was way too cold. So I suggested not swimming for a long time here.🙂
Then we were heading to the long-anticipated Navagio beach (Shipwreck). In 1980s, a freight liner ran aground here and still rests buried in the limestone gravel of the beach that now bears the nickname Shipwreck. We stopped here for an hour and we really enjoyed the time staying on the beach.
Back to the port and time for lunch, our guide
Pigi took us back to Korithi to have some sea food and Greek yogurt. Our next
stop is Shipwreck Bay Lookout that hangs above Navagio beach.
Next I’m going to tell you that the scenery I watched there
was far beyond my expectation. It was truly amazing and definitely a memorial
moment in life. Our Chinese and English vocabulary is too poor to describe what
I saw.
"Bluer than blue" - That's the only words that could come to mind.
Then we headed back to Zakynthos Town. Along
the road we saw some ancient villages and green mountains which is also
impressive. It was a long way, nearly 2 hours. Luckily we had Pigi. Pigi is not
only good at driving, but also good at talking. Although we got along for only
a few hours, but we talked about many topics ranging from
zante/greece/Trump/politics to drama/ work/life. It was really interesting for such
conversations between people from different culture background.
Zakynthos town is small, peaceful and beautiful.
Pigi introduced us the main buildings and delicious food here. We even enjoyed
the ice cream she recommended.
Then we flied back to Athens in the evening. A
really perfect day in Zakynthos, and Pigi made it even better.
